Public eduction, since its inception in the 19th century, has been under attack from the right – from Big Business unhappy about being robbed of child labor to the Ku Klux Klan marching in the streets, from the Scopes Trial and the Christian right’s war on science to the Red Scare of McCarthyism. What we are seeing today with Moms for Liberty and other radical groups is not new. Their extremist crusade to disrupt, if not completely destroy, Public Education is rooted in this history.
